5 INTERIOR DESIGN STYLES EXPLAINED

MID-CENTURY MODERN

The Mid-century Modern style has been a popular style on the world of interior design for the last years. It’s essentially the interior design style that emerged in the middle of the 20th century in America and Scandinavia. Mid-century pieces are often a mix of organic and geometric forms, with clean lines and soft curves.

The Mid-century Modern trend is going strong – many of the original pieces designed over 70 years ago are still being made to this day.

Some important characteristics:

  • Use of original or vintage design furniture.

  • Darker wood tones.

  • Use of metal and glass.

  • Bold accent colors.

JAPANDI

Japandi design is the combination of Scandinavian coziness and Japanese minimalism to create a feeling of art, nature, and simplicity. This fusion creates the perfect blend of function and form, focusing on clean lines and soft colors. The shared aesthetics of the two come together to create a style that is both easy going and sophisticated.

Some important characteristics:

  • Simple clean lines.

  • De-clutter spaces.

  • Neutral colors.

  • Use of light oak.

  • Quality and bespoke craftsmanship.

MINIMALIST

Minimalist design is in essence about prioritizing what is essential. It’ all about function, quality products and a few “open” spaces to provide serenity. Many people tend to think that minimalism is a white room with only a few pieces of furniture, but achieving this look is, frankly, more difficult than just choosing a few pieces of furniture on a white background. It's impossible to deny the serenity and simple beauty when confronted with a minimalist interior.

Some important characteristics:

  • Storage solutions are the secret to minimalist design.

  • Quality over quantity.

  • Neutral base.

  • Emphasize on lighting and materials.

MEDITERRANEAN

Mediterranean decor originates from countries like Spain, Greece, Italy and others surrounding the Mediterranean Sea. It features simple, summer aesthetics with natural materials and warm, sandy brown tones. Robust and raw shapes rather than slim and smooth.

Some important characteristics:

  • Texture/stucco walls.

  • Arcs.

  • Natural materials.

  • Medium/dark wood.

CONTEMPORARY

Basically, is the interior design style of the moment.

It’s easy to get Contemporary and Modern mixed up as interior design names. Modern refers to the design movement of the 20th century specifically. So Contemporary doesn’t always mean modern! Contemporary style could be more vintage or traditional, depending on what’s in vogue. Therefore, Contemporary style will change over time.

Currently, the Contemporary style uses lots of curved lines and tends towards Scandinavian Mid-century. We would say the Contemporay style now is more Eclectic than ever, but still sophisticated. It’s Mediterranean colors, Scandinavian cosiness, Minamlist simplicity and lots of the seventies inflated curved shapes.

Some important characteristics:

  • Curves.

  • Soft browns.

  • Stucco walls.

  • Neutral tones.

  • Art.
